One response to “Migrating from Dreamhost email to Google Apps”

I spoke to DreamHost support who says that ticking the “I will still check my email at DreamHost” box when adding a new MX record is NOT doing what we think it will.

They said that you should NOT tick that box. Here’s the relevant part of their reply:

“That checkbox will not do what you want. The cool thing is, you don’t
need to do anything special, your mail accounts hosted here will stay
active even after you enable custom MX records to send new emails
elsewhere. Our wiki has a bit more information about this.

So basically: Just add the new MX record, and that’s it. You can still check email using direct connections to the old dreamhost mail servers, while you wait for MX records to update around the world. When you are sure that you’ve got the last of the email trickle, you can disable all email hosting at DreamHost.
